The e-bike industry is booming – and becoming more connected by the day.

Riders expect not only performance and range, but also remote diagnostics, theft protection, OTA updates, and app integrations. For OEMs, this shift means evolving into mobility tech providers, not just manufacturers.

To stay competitive, you need a way to offer the full digital experience for your riders - including premium services, remote management, an option to deliver updates securely, and collect valuable product feedback – without adding unnecessary complexity or cost.

The Challenges e-Bike OEMs Are Facing

“We have no idea how our bikes perform after the selling point.”

No post-sale visibility means missed opportunities for product improvement, early fault detection, and user engagement. Limits the ability to build data-driven roadmaps or personalize services.

“There’s no way to benefit from e-bikes after the sale itself.”

Lost revenue opportunities from value-added services (e.g., diagnostics, upgrades, insurance). One-time product sales instead of long-term customer relationships or recurring revenue streams.

“Our support team is flooded with issues we can’t see remotely.”

Lack of real-time diagnostics leads to guesswork, costly field service, and poor support efficiency. Increased warranty costs and user dissatisfaction.

“Our riders are frustrated by avoidable failures”

No predictive maintenance or health monitoring leads to unexpected downtimes. Damages brand reputation and customer trust.

“Rider experience suffers after sale, as we have no control over it”

Users get outdated experiences as competitors release new features via OTA updates. No differentiation in an increasingly crowded market.

“Every component vendor speaks a different language.”

Proprietary, siloed protocols slow down integration and time-to-market. Lock-in with specific vendors restricts flexibility and innovation.

FAQ – Common Questions from e-Bike Teams

Can you work with custom e-bike controllers?

Yes. Our Anjay SDK runs on virtually any embedded hardware and can be tailored to your architecture.

How does LwM2M compare to MQTT or HTTP APIs?

LwM2M is purpose-built for constrained devices – it offers more efficient payloads, built-in security (DTLS), and native support for FOTA and remote management. Unlike MQTT clients that rely on TCP, Anjay IoT SDK (AVSystem’s Client) uses UDP-based LwM2M, making it significantly more reliable and efficient in lossy and constrained networks where packet loss and limited bandwidth are common. These characteristics are particularly important when you want to operate on low-power & long range networks like NB-IoT, which are perfect for moving IoT devices like e-bikes.

We already use another protocol. Why switch to LwM2M?

LwM2M is optimized for constrained environments and OTA operations. It’s lightweight, secure, and built for modern, interoperable IoT - unlike legacy or proprietary solutions. Moreover, while custom-built solutions may meet initial requirements, they often face critical scalability challenges at larger deployments - where maintaining consistent performance, reliability, and over-the-air manageability becomes increasingly complex. Without proven mechanisms for fault tolerance, software updates, and network optimizations, even minor service outages can impact thousands of devices simultaneously - leading to degraded customer experience, operational disruptions, and ultimately revenue loss.

What if our bikes are already in the field?

You can retrofit AVSystem’s solution via firmware updates or work with us to roll it into your next hardware version.
