Coiote IoT Device Management / LwM2M Server
Connect smart water meters and manage them remotely at scale

Smart water metering challenges
Water management is undergoing a transformation. To ensure sustainable resource management, detailed water consumption monitoring, and reduced maintenance costs, smart meters provide significant benefits. They enable real-time data monitoring, leak detection, and remote maintenance.
This necessitates the creation of smart water management systems capable of communicating with smart meters to collect and process data, as well as integrate with other internal applications.
To build such systems, water management companies choose NB-IoT for smart metering due to its wide coverage, low power consumption, and cost efficiency, allowing devices to operate in remote areas on a single battery for up to 10 years.
The technology’s scalability and reliability on licensed spectrum make it suitable for large-scale deployments, providing secure and frequent data collection, monitoring, and analytics compared to traditional meters. Additionally, NB-IoT’s global standardization ensures compatibility across regions and supports future IoT expansions within water management systems.

How to connect smart water meters?
To connect smart water meters using the LwM2M protocol, the meters are equipped with an LwM2M client that communicates with an LwM2M server via the CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol), which is optimized for low-power and low-bandwidth networks like NB-IoT.
CoAP ensures efficient transmission of data, such as water usage and alerts, while LwM2M, built on top of CoAP, enables remote monitoring, device management, and seamless integration with water management systems. Additionally, CoAP can be secured with DTLS (Datagram Transport Layer Security), providing encryption and data integrity for secure communication.

Collect accurate smart water meter readings
Bill customers, share data with clients and adjust water distribution.
- Collect more detailed and more frequent data on water usage than with traditional manual meter readings.
- Measure water usage to identify where water is being consumed and lost within the water network. This helps detect leaks and optimize water distribution based on demand.
- Bill clients based on detailed water consumption and share data with clients through the end application integrated with Coiote IoT Device Management Platform.
- Ensure efficient data transfer - Utilize LwM2M over CoAP, using minimal bandwidth to transmit essential data even when connectivity is limited or intermittent.
- Balance data reliability and efficiency with CoAP capabilities - by enabling retransmissions, crucial for alerts, while non-confirmable messages save bandwidth for routine data by sending without acknowledgment.
- Monitor smart water meter connectivity status - to prevent data loss, and improve operational efficiency by enabling proactive maintenance.
- Reduce development time of building smart metering systems by using standardized LwM2M objects and resources providing ready-made templates for common sensor data like water usage, flow, water pressure, temperature and device data.
